What is a clic-clac designed for daily use?

The mechanism of a clic-clac is well-known: the seat and backrest fold down to form a double bed, parallel to the wall. This streamlined mechanism makes it particularly compact and practical if you are short on space.

This is also a point of vigilance: depending on the design of the bed base and the thickness of the mattress, a junction zone may be noticeable in the center. On quality models equipped with a sufficiently thick mattress, this sensation is imperceptible.

For an occasional extra bed, a basic foam mattress may suffice. For daily or regular use, the requirements change significantly.

• A 10 to 12 cm mattress is suitable for occasional use.
• For sleeping every day, it is recommended to aim for at least 14 cm, or even more for better long-term comfort.

At La Maison Convertible, the mattresses offered on the most comfortable models are generally between 14 and 20 cm, with versions around 17 cm offering enhanced comfort for daily use.

Foam density is the second criterion, often underestimated when purchasing. For regular use, opt for a density greater than 30 kg/m³.

• 22–25 kg/m³: pleasant initial comfort but limited durability
• ≥30 kg/m³: better long-term hold
• 40–50 kg/m³: more durable and qualitative support.

Density corresponds to the amount of material, not the perceived firmness. A foam can be soft but dense, and therefore durable.

The bed base is the third pillar. It plays an essential role in the comfort of a clic-clac. The models offered by La Maison Convertible are equipped with a bed base designed to provide uniform and durable support, suitable for daily sleeping.

Bed base and mechanism: the pillars of lasting comfort

The mattress isn't everything. The bed base plays a key role in support, ventilation, and pressure distribution.

On a clic-clac, two configurations exist:

• Metal mesh: found on entry-level models, sometimes less comfortable and can become noisy over time
• Slatted base: more common on quality models, offering more uniform and durable support.

The mechanism must also be suitable for repeated use:

• robust frame (often steel)
• smooth opening
• jerk-free locking.

A good mechanism is designed to withstand frequent use over several years.

Ideal dimensions for daily sleeping

The standard dimension remains 130x190 cm:

• suitable for a single person
• usable for two with a good mattress

For more comfort, some models are available in 140x190 cm.

The space saving compared to a fixed bed is considerable. A 140x190 cm bed with bedside tables occupies approximately 4.5 m². A clic-clac sofa with the same sleeping area occupies less than 2 m² on the floor and fulfills both functions: seating by day and sleeping by night. In an 18 m² studio, choosing a 140x190 cm clic-clac instead of a fixed bed frees up the equivalent of a small dining table or a desk area.

The question of dimension is not limited to that of the mattress. It is necessary to check the total space when the bed is open. The depth occupied in the night position corresponds to the depth of the sofa plus the opening clearance, i.e., approximately 140 to 150 cm for a standard model.

Clic-clac, BZ, or Rapido: which mechanism for your daily life?

The clic-clac is not the only mechanism available in our collection, and it is useful to compare it to the BZ and Rapido for daily use.

If your priority is space-saving and you sleep alone or with a suitable mattress, a good clic-clac is perfectly sufficient. For a couple in a very small space, a BZ may be appropriate.
