A sofa bed can have a real mattress that can be up to 20 cm thick. A low-density polyether foam block of 25 kg/m3 can only be used for occasional sleeping, as it does not provide sufficient support. For everyday sleeping, it is recommended to turn to different mattress technologies:
- Latex , the firmness of which will depend on its density (soft at 65 kg/m3, medium at around 75 kg/m3 and very firm at 83 kg/m3).
- Polyurethane foam is the most basic material for a mattress. It can have a density of 30 kg/m³ for a soft mattress, 40 kg/m³ for a medium mattress, and 50 kg/m³ for a firm or memory foam mattress.
- The springs that provide body support with their metal structure. Pocket springs are springs individually wrapped in a non-woven fabric and glued or sewn together. They allow for good sleeping independence.
- Memory foam mattresses are still not commonly used as a mattress on sofa beds. This material is highly recommended for back or joint pain, as it absorbs pressure on pressure points. An alternative is high-resilience foam, which supports the back and lumbar region thanks to its higher foam density.
- Viscoelastic memory foam has the disadvantage of not being suitable for people who sweat excessively at night. It's better to turn to latex. Latex is a naturally derived, hypoallergenic material made from rubber tree sap. Alternatively, pocket springs allow free air circulation and therefore natural ventilation of the mattress.
What size sofa should I choose?
